The industrial expansion of the 1940's and 1950's fostered the birth of many companies positioned to serve the city's role as a center for road, rail, river, and air transportation of the nation's agricultural and manufacturing output.
Among these firms was Highway Trailer Company, a sales and service firm dedicated to supporting the trucking industry. Eventually, Highway Trailer Company became Trailer Services, Inc., and focused on the rebuilding, repair, and maintenance of trailers. Trailer Services quickly became Kansas City's premier semi-trailer service provider and was known, trusted and respected by customers and vendors of all sizes.
	Trailer Services focus on service work left a void in new and used trailer sales that was filled for many years by direct factory representation. As markets became more competitive in the 1960's, the effectiveness and efficiencies of local representation dictated a return to dealer organizations. In a trend that has continued over the intervening decades, more and more trailer manufacturers found that they could deliver more value at lower costs by relying on independent dealerships loyal to their customer base, rather than to the trailer manufacturer. Highway Trailer Sales, Inc. was established in April, 1970 as a customer-driven sales company.
For over a quarter century, Highway Trailer Sales, Inc. and Trailer Services, Inc. operated in a mutually supportive manner to provide a full range of sales and service support for local, regional, national and international customers of all types. Individual owner-operators, farmers, businessmen of all types, governments and major fleets all found themselves welcome.
	As manufacturers, types, styles and sizes of trailers proliferated, adequate parts support became an increasingly complex and challenging problem. Highway Trailer Parts, Inc. was organized in June, 1987 to meet this challenge. Highway Trailer Parts ensured timely and economical availability of parts and equipment to shops and fleets throughout the area.
Finally, in October 1996, Trailer Services and Highway Trailer Parts were folded into Highway Trailer Sales, Inc. This allowed full integration of operations, utilizing state-of-the-art systems to maximize customer satisfaction while realizing the economies of combined operations.
